needing my space

my closet.

my closet might seem like a strange thing to celebrate.

but i often come here to write (escape). (ok, maybe 'often' is a stretch).

if you live in a one-bedroom apartment, you understand.

there just isn't really room enough for everyone's (my)

thoughts here, sometimes. (lars' has a pretty loud

stare when he's bored - which is always).

i always imagine that one day,

i'll have a big desk, and i'll get up

early every morning and run write

all day. yes, one day that will happen.

until then, there are closets.

and late nights.

i think the name is hilarious, but

it's a beautiful magazine, full of

memorial day weekend.

we've been busy this weekend,

and i'm trying to eke out time to do 

schoolwork, too. i know it'll all come together - 

just.one.more.week. 

so this weekend has been full of:

1. family

2. old Mr. Bean episodes

3. reading, reading, reading

4. really hot weather

5. being too tired to study

we had family time last night,

and just got back from another family gathering.

poor lars has been wondering where we've been going, 

i think. hopefully there will be more park time for him

after another week.

friendly encouragement.

awhile back i celebrated compliment day,

and i got some really, really nice compliments

today from some totally awesome classmates, 

and i just have to say, they made my day. 

and that's huge for me right now. 

i can't thank Sydia and Krystal enough, 

for being so positive, encouraging and

inspiring. they're also going to be pretty famous

on tv someday. i'm sure of it.

Lars is an avid shaker. 

ever since Jazz taught Lars how to shake, 

when he was just a wee little pup,

he is always trying to get us to shake with him.

he will do it all day long, 

(not for free, of course. great shakers 

are hard to come by, don't you know.)

i first heard it last fall on librivox,

and then we watched the movie. 

oh the disappointment! 

if you don't know, it's nothing like the book.

but what was i expecting? 

hollywood always gets it wrong. 

but that's okay. that's why we have books, no?

SCAN launch party. 

Our quarterly magazine, for which I do copy editing, 

had its first real launch party tonight for our new issue. 

It was, in Rob's words, a "rousing success."

I couldn't have said it better. 

There was lots of chocolate, lots of picture-taking,

and some good conversations, which I really needed.

the eye of the storm

unplugged.

today i took some time to recharge. 

life has been going at a crazy pace

recently, and as much as i hate to admit it,

i had to slow down and turn off.

for a little while at least.

i may not have met all my obligations or

done everything on my list, but i got some 

much-needed calm in my crazy little mind, and

trust me, we're all better off this way:)

last December i got to meet some of 

Jazz's family in Florida, under unfortunate circumstances.

it was a sad trip, but we did pick up a few sea sponges.

and i know this is sort of an awkward celebration, but 

they have revolutionized my bathing experience.

that may be a little dramatic. but, seriously. 

they are awesome.

this week I am reading Michael Chabon's

The Final Solution. I was once told I should

read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, 

and I confess I never did...

I've only just begun this novella,

but so far it's loverly.

for which i got to write some fiction!

it's almost summer!

ranting about grammar mistakes.

monster monday (what i'm reading now)

Frankenstein.

i've never read this book or seen the movie, 

so it's very exciting.

i have a feeling it's going to be very different 

from the depictions of frankenstein in other stories/movies.
